The digital certificate (certificado digital) is now essential for dealing with the Spanish administration: filing taxes, signing contracts, applying for your NIE or checking your electronic notifications. This guide explains how to get a digital certificate in Spain as a foreigner, what the alternatives are, when to renew it and which mistakes to avoid.
How to get a digital certificate in Spain as a foreigner
The most common route is to apply for the FNMT digital certificate (National Mint and Stamp Factory). First you must verify your identity in person at an authorised registration office, such as the Tax Agency, Social Security or certain consular offices.
If you live outside Spain, some consulates also offer this service. Check in advance, as not all do.
Alternatives to the FNMT certificate: DNIe, residence card (TIE) and Cl@ve
If you can’t visit an office in person, you have other options:
- DNIe, an increasingly common alternative.
- The certificate embedded in the residence card (TIE), for residents, where enabled.
- Cl@ve, an access system for certain procedures that requires no software installation.
Renewing your digital certificate: why it pays to plan ahead
A digital certificate is valid for one to four years, depending on the type, and must be renewed before it expires. Renewing while it’s still valid is far simpler. After expiry, you usually have to repeat the in-person verification from scratch.
Common mistakes when installing and using your digital certificate
- Installing it on a different device from the one used for the request.
- Not exporting a backup before changing computers.
- Confusing the individual certificate with the company representative certificate, which requires additional steps.
A small slip in any of these steps can leave you without access right when you need it most.
Digital certificate checklist
- Book an appointment at an authorised registration office before starting the online request.
- Obtain your FNMT application code.
- Export a backup copy as soon as the certificate is installed.
- Mark the expiry date on your calendar to renew with time to spare.
- Check whether you need the individual or the company representative certificate.
- Consider Cl@ve or the DNIe if you can’t visit an office in person.
Digital certificate in Spain: frequently asked questions
Can I get a digital certificate without being in Spain?
Yes, in some cases through certain Spanish consulates, although not all offer this service. It’s best to check in advance.
What happens if my digital certificate expires?
It stops being valid and, in most cases, you must repeat the full in-person verification process to get a new one.
Can I use my digital certificate to represent my company?
Not the individual certificate. To act on behalf of a company you need the representative certificate, which requires additional documents.
Can I use the same certificate on several devices?
Yes, as long as you export the backup and install it correctly on each device before you need it.
